The Media Council of Kenya has urged photojournalists to leverage on technology to make their work better.

Council's Mombasa Regional Coordinator Maureen Mudi, while speaking to members of Mombasa Photographers Hub on Monday, said photographers are a key pillar in the media industry.

Mudi said photojournalists should not only take pictures but also record news and current events.

She said during the August 9 election polls last year, photojournalists in Mombasa undertook training to sharpen their skills.

Mudi also said MCK recently trained 50 videographers and photojournalists in an online engagement centred on safety and protection.

“MCK offers training opportunities for photographers who on most occasions are on the frontline in covering stories," Mudi said.

"They need to understand their safety needs and conduct advance assessment and emergency action plans in situations that may require swift action."

Mombasa Photographers Hub Secretary General Clifford Ghaa said they currently have 200 photographers in Kwale and Kilifi counties.

Ghaa called for a partnership with the Council noting that it will be beneficial in helping their members in capacity building and professional growth.

“We are looking forward to collaborating with like-minded organisations and having our members receive refresher courses and training in areas where there are gaps,” Ghaa said.

To help photographers in the Hub perform their duties more professionally, Ghaa requested that the Council should accredit them.

Ghaa noted that August 19, 2023, will mark World Photography Day.

“Hence, accrediting our members will enhance professionalism and recognition during the event,”  Ghaa said.
