More female candidates are sitting this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations compared to their male counterparts in Malindi subcounty, Kilifi county.

Out of a total of 4,692 candidates who started writing their examination papers Monday, 2,409 are females while the males are 2,283, Subcounty Director of Education Rashid Roba Adan said.

Speaking to the Kenya News Agency after distributing examination papers at the Malindi Deputy County Commissioner’s office Monday, Adan said the examinations are being conducted in 50 centres, with 52 secondary schools presenting candidates for the tests.

“We have a total of 52 schools which presented KCSE candidates, but two of the schools are being hosted in other schools,” Adan said.

He said all examination and security officials had adequately been briefed on the conduct of the examination and warned that anyone who will involve themselves in examination irregularities would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The director said all examination centre managers and invigilators will have to surrender their mobile phones to their respective supervisors, who will put them under lock and key until the end of the examination.

He also warned against allowing any unauthorised persons into the examination centres, including teachers employed by Boards of Governors.

Malindi Deputy County Commissioner David Lusava said adequate security personnel had been deployed to all the 50 centres.

He said the examinations kicked off well in the two sub counties – Malindi and Langobaya – which have separate examination containers.

The exam entered day two on Tuesday.

Candidates are expected to sit for Mathematics Paper 1 in the morning, and later on in the afternoon, they will write the English comprehension paper.

On Monday, the candidates sat for the English Functional Skills paper during the morning hours, while Chemistry Paper 1 in the afternoon.

The exam started on October 22, where the candidates took their oral and practical exams for the elective subjects.
