Traders converge at Muthara market in Tigania East, Meru complaining of insecurity and disease prone market

Traders at Muthara market in Tigania East, Meru are protesting the dilapidated state, unclogged sewage waste and insecurity.

The traders said the market has become dirty exposing them to diseases.

They demanded cabro paving initiated by former Governor Peter Munya inside the market.

Rose Kajuju who spoke on behalf of women traders said the administration has failed on their duties to collect waste from the market.

The garbage has piled up.

Kajuju said the market lacks safe water making it an environmental hazard.

She said if action is not taken, they will stop paying taxes to the county.

“The toilets are a health risk because they are not routinely or daily cleaned. It is a shame that both men and women share the same toilets,” she said.

“Responsible officers should do their duties without failing.”

Christine Lingui said insecurity has increased.

“We live like children of the lesser God under Kiraitu. We plead with Munya to come home and fight to take back his governor’s seat. When he was the governor, we benefitted immensely,” Liguli said.

Flora Njiliu said the market has become a grazing field for pigs and goats that eat their vegetables and fruits.

“We are suffering and incurring losses due to negligence,” she said.
