More than 300 persons living with disability in Kitui West constituency, Kitui county have benefitted from Sh9 million mobility equipment.

The equipment were distributed by Hope Mobility organisation through a programme co-sponsored by MP Edith Nyenze.

The 361 beneficiaries were selected from a list of more than 800 people who had expressed interest.

They were then assessed and taken through a two-day training in Matinyani and Mutonguni on how to use the equipment.

The equipment include, paediatric wheelchairs, basic wheelchairs, crutches, elbow crutches, walking frames and walking canes.

Hope Mobility programme coordinator Marygoret Kilonzo said the organisation's mission is to make sure that no human experiences mobility issues.

She thanked Nyenze for showing compassion for persons with disability who have been neglected in the society.

“As an organisation, our main goal is to ensure no one, in the entire nation, crawls when moving from one point to the next” Kilonzo said.

Hope Mobility specialist Jerob Naomi said the organisation follows the World Health Organization guidelines in sitting and fitting mobility equipment.

She said this helps the beneficiaries in their day today activities and not injure them in the process.

“We follow the eight assessment steps recommended by WHO and after the assessments, we do the fitting and later do a follow-up to ensure we fit the devices properly and according to the needs of the individual,” Naomi said.

Nyenze said the equipment will lessen the caregivers' jobs.

She said the programme will empower the beneficiaries and make them productive.

“I am appealing to individuals who have children who are disabled to take them to hospitals and schools because some of the conditions, if detected early, can be cured," Nyenze said.

She appealed to other leaders to take up the challenge and do the assessments and reach out to the needy.

"Many people need the government’s assistance to become productive, self-sufficient and independent," she said.
