A police officer has died as two others sustained serious injuries after an unknown number of heavily armed assailants attacked security officers at a roadblock (barrier point), within the Sessi area in the border town of Moyale in Marsabit County.

Consequently, all security apparatus in the county have been activated with an intense manhunt for the suspects currently underway.

A coman was also critically wounded following the attack by the suspected criminals, who were using grenades and assault rifles.

Marsabit county police commander, Leonard Kimaiyo, said the attack which took place around 6pm, was carried out by suspected criminals reported to have been riding on a motorcycle.

Kimaiyo said the injured were rushed to Moyale Sub-county Hospital where one of the officers who had suffered severe injuries on the upper limps succumbed while undergoing treatment.

The county commander added that two undetonated grenades were recovered at the scene and were later detonated by officers from the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), who had also responded to the incident.

He appealed to residents of Moyale town to be calm, as the situation was under control and urged the residents to cooperate with security agencies by volunteering useful information that could help in the arrest of the culprits.

Kimaiyo said that arrangements were being made to airlift the injured who suffered multiple injuries to Nairobi, for specialised treatment.

The attackers who opened fire indiscriminately at the Multi-Agency Team that was manning the border point, left the victims with critical wounds, with one of them left with grenade pellets lodged in his body.

Detectives are piecing up clues to establish the motive of the attack as they pursue the perpetrators.
