National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei has assured Nyanza residents that Kenya Kwanza government will serve them without discrimination.
She said President William Ruto has appointed several leaders from Nyanza to government positions without looking at how the region voted in last year's general election.
Shollei said Kenya Kwanza regime promised to form an all-inclusive government and there is no need for people from the Luo community to fear being left out.
Leaders from the region already appointed to various government positions include Evans Kidero, Fred Outa, Odoyo Owidi, Alfred K’Ombudo, Omondi Anyanga, Nicholas Gumbo and Raymond Omollo, among others.
Luo Nyanza consists of four counties-Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya and Migori.
Residents have been supporting ODM leader Raila Odinga in his quest to become president.
Shollei said President Ruto will not sideline Luos in his government.
“There is no need of you engaging in anti-government protests at this time. President Ruto is a trusted man who doesn’t rescind his promises,” she said.
President Ruto had pledged to work with all Kenyans irrespective of how they voted in the last election.
Raila got more votes in Nyanza than Ruto in the 2022 presidential election.
Shollei said the government has earmarked development projects to be implemented in the region.
She was speaking on Sunday during a fundraiser at Wachara Catholic Church in Ndhiwa.
She was in the company of former Ndhiwa MP Agostino Neto, former Kabondo Kasipul MP Silvance Osele and Retirement Benefit Authority chairman Nelson Havi .
Shollei said the government has released subsidised fertilisers to boost food production.
“Nyanza is one of the food basket regions in Kenya. Let’s utilise the subsidised fertilisers to grow food crops,” she said.
Shollei promised to mobilise for the construction of Wachara-Osani-Nyakwere road which becomes impassable during rains.
“I am going to talk to the CS in charge of Roads Kipchumba Murkomen to intervene so the road can be constructed,” she said.
Neto said demonstrations will not help lower the high cost of living in the country.
“We shouldn’t use demos as an approach to address our problems as Kenyans. Demonstrations will never provide solutions to the current high cost of living,” he said.
Neto said there is a need for a cordial relationship between Luos and other communities.
“Luos and Kalenjins should not fight because of an individual. We are brothers and sisters,” Neto said.
Osele asked residents to shun a misconception that Raila may use demonstrations to take over the presidency from Ruto before the 2027 general election.
“The anti-government protests will not lead us anywhere if we don’t change tack. When did covering heads with sufuria oust a sitting president?” he asked.
Osele urged residents to focus on development to help address unemployment among the youth.
“Let’s work with the government to address unemployment among the youth. Opposition doesn’t offer youth employment,” he added.
Havi asked Kenyans to unite for uniform development.
“Let Kenyans unite to realize a transformative development being pushed by the government,” Havi said.
