Six people sustained gunshot wounds on Thursday when protesters engaged the anti-riot police in Homa Bay.
Four men and two women were rushed to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention.
One of the victims Abdi Rashid said he was shot inside his house as he was repairing a door with a carpenter.
The incident occurred when some protesting youths engaged the police as they pelted stones near K'Otieno in Shauri Yako estate, Homa Bay town.
Some protesting youths ran into Rashid's residence compound to seek refuge as the chaos escalated.
“Something suddenly hit my groin as I peeped. I didn’t feel the pain immediately but my trouser was already wet with blood,” Rashid said.
Rashid was rushed to the hospital by a boda boda rider.
Hospital CEO Peter Ogola said Rashid is one of the two people whom X-rays found had bullets lodged in their bodies.
The other four patients had injuries on their legs.
“We have received six people with injuries affecting their legs. Two men have foreign objects lodged in their bodies,” Ogola said.
The medic said they are likely to discharge two men and two women after treating them.
Some of the injured persons were taken to the hospital by Kenya Red Cross officers.
“The two men who had bullets lodged in their bodies will be taken to the theatre,” Ogola said.
