Nyamira County Assemblysession in progress. MCAs have called for additional resources to counties

Nyamira County MCAs have called on the National Government to allocate more funds to the devolved units to help booster development.

The ward reps said the slow development rate in counties is due to delayed funding which they said is not adequate for the needs of devolved units.

Nyamira County Assembly Budget Committee chairperson and Bogichora Ward MCA George Abuga said development in counties had stagnated.

Abuga said the funds that are given by the National Government cannot meet the needs of the counties.

“What we generate as own source revenue alone cannot sustain operations in the county government," Abuga said.

"That is why we are calling upon the National Government to ensure there is adequate resource allocation to our counties so that smooth devolution operations can be achieved,” he noted.

Majority Whip and Township Ward MCA Duke Masira said there is nothing much that can be achieved in the counties with the current limited.

Masira emphasised that counties cannot only depend on their own source of revenue to develop.

The MCAs spoke in Nyamira town on Wednesday where they called for support from national leaders in pushing for more resource allocation.

Masira said most of the funds in the counties end up paying employees salaries leaving very little for development which should be a priority in the county.

That alone, according to Masira makes the counties drag in terms of development.

“The residents of all the counties in Kenya expect development and they are getting nervous that nothing much is being achieved despite them knowing that there is funding from the national government," Masira said.

"They are waiting for development which we cannot give them because we are unable as counties,” Masira noted.
