Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has vowed to dismantle criminal gangs operating in the county.

He warned young people being used to perpetrate violence that they will individually bear the consequences of their actions.

The governor's remarks came in the wake of the violent attack on Chemelil Academy in Muhoroni subcounty on June 18, where a gang of armed youths stormed the school, assaulted staff, vandalised property and stole valuables.

"We are united in our resolve to dismantle these networks and restore public confidence and security," Nyong'o said in a statement.

"The young people involved and being misused in this menace have to stay warned that their atonement will be borne solely and not collectively."

The county chief said he had held consultations with Kisumu County Commissioner Ramadhan Mwabudzo and the county security leadership over the growing threat posed by organised criminal gangs and what he described as "goonism" in the county.

Nyong'o termed the attack on Chemelil Academy a barbaric act that targeted not only the institution but also the values of education, decency and the rule of law.

According to police investigations, a group of about 20 men armed with crude weapons descended on the school during the day, causing widespread destruction.

Officers from Muhoroni subcounty police command responded to a distress call and found the attackers fleeing in different directions, with some escaping towards Achego while others disappeared into nearby sugar cane plantations.

The gang reportedly broke into the administration block and vandalised the offices of the principal and deputy principal.

Staff members were assaulted during the attack, while 10 smartphones, cash and other valuables were stolen.

Several injured staff members were rushed to Nyang'oma Subcounty Hospital, where they received treatment and were reported to be in stable condition.

Following the incident, detectives launched investigations that led to the arrest of three suspects identified as Bernard Ouma, Thomas Ouma and Walter Owa, also known as Teddy Obul.

The three suspects are in police custody awaiting arraignment, while detectives continue pursuing other members of the gang who remain at large.

Nyong'o commended the National Police Service and security agencies for the swift arrests, saying the action demonstrated that criminal activities would not be tolerated in Kisumu county.

"I urge investigators to pursue all those involved, regardless of their status or influence, to ensure the full force of the law is exhibited on them," he said.

The governor maintained that schools must remain safe spaces for learning and social advancement, adding that individuals who attack educational institutions are enemies of progress.

"Those behind the Chemelil Academy attack must be identified, exposed and prosecuted without fear or favour," he said.
