A family in the Olderkesi area in Narok West Subcounty is counting losses after tens of sheep were killed by hyenas in the wee hours of the night.

Joel Kuyo said this was not the first time the wild animals invaded the homestead.

A fortnight ago, 12 sheep were killed by hyenas at the same home.

He spoke on behalf of the affected family.

“We depend fully on our livestock for survival. We buy food, and pay school fees among other expenses using money from the livestock. The current trend could increase the poverty index in this area,” Kuyo said.

The residents called on Kenya Wildlife Service to intervene and drive away the wild animals that have increased in numbers in the area.

Edwin Silolo, a KWS official in charge of compensation in Narok West, said he visited the homestead and confirmed that 16 sheep had been killed on Wednesday night.

He confirmed that  12 sheep had been killed in the same homestead two weeks ago.

He said KWS through its mother Ministry-Tourism and Wildlife,  put a strategy where farmers who suffer losses from human-wild conflict are compensated in three months.

The officer called on the family and the community at large to be patient as their claims are being processed.

“President William Ruto launched a programme that will see residents who suffer from wildlife attack compensated in three months, the farmer will be compensated soon,” Silolo said.

The KWS official asked residents to communicate with KWS through *202*09# which is free of charge in case of any attack from wild animals.

“If you dial the code, we will act immediately by coming where you are so that we can confirm the losses and process your compensation.

"If the incident is not reported, then you will not be compensated,” he said.
