A section of youth from the Kerio Valley of Elgeyo Marakwet have criticised the move by Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah to challenge the appointment of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
The group led by their chairman Kirop Kimaiyo told Omtatah to keep off the work of the new IG.
The Busia Senator filed a petition seeking the removal of Kanja from office.
In the petition, the Senator avers that Kanja's appointment contravenes the Constitution since he believes the new IG was handpicked and the appointment was not subjected to a competitive process.
Speaking Friday, the youth described the move by the Senator as a witch-hunt.
"We are surprised by the attempts by the Senator to block the work of the new IG who has worked hard when he was the GSU Commandant to reduce banditry and cattle rustling incidents along the Kerio Valley," said Kimaiyo.
They said Kanja is the right candidate to eliminate crime in the country since he well understands the dynamics of the security sector.
"The truth of the matter is that Kanja has risen through the ranks and understands issues to do with the security sector. When he was the GSU Commandant, he greatly helped reduce acts of lawlessness along the Kerio Valley," said Kimaiyo.
"Senator Omtatah should tell Kenyans why he did not raise the matter when the Senate debated the appointment of Kanja in Senate," said Kimaiyo.
He said Kanja remains the best candidate for the post of IG, saying Omtata should withdraw the case to allow him to serve Kenyans.
"It Is time we allow Kanja to serve Kenyans. The case filed by Omtatah and his fellow activists should be dismissed. Kenya is facing many challenges in the security sector that need full concentration of Kanja. Let us engage in constructive issues," said Kimaiyo.
