The fight against jiggers has taken a major step forward at Chebosi Comprehensive School in Webuye West constituency.
An anti-jigger campaign initiative has kicked off in the constituency, bringing much-needed relief to affected individuals.
The initiative by Joseph Waswa Foundation aims to combat the menace of jiggers, which has been a persistent issue due to poverty and poor hygiene in the region.
The event saw the foundation’s team engaging in multiple activities, including hygiene promotion, medical treatment, and educational sessions on preventive measures.
Philanthropist Joseph Lendrix Waswa founded the foundation.
The team was met with an overwhelming turnout of locals, many of whom have suffered for years due to jigger infestations.
One of the beneficiaries, 12-year-old Brian Wekesa, shared his experience.
"For a long time, I have been unable to walk properly due to jiggers. My classmates would laugh at me, and I often missed school. Today, after receiving treatment, I feel like I have a new chance at life. I can’t wait to get back to school without pain,” he said.
Another resident, Margaret Wanjala, a mother of four, expressed her gratitude.
"My children have suffered from jiggers for years, and I have struggled to get them help. Thanks to the Joseph Waswa Foundation, they have been treated, and I have been educated on how to maintain hygiene to prevent future infestations. This is a blessing to us."
The foundation’s efforts go beyond immediate treatment.
Educational sessions focused on promoting better sanitation practices. Beneficiaries were given resources such as disinfectants, shoes, and bedding to affected families.
Volunteers also demonstrated how to keep homes clean and prevent reinfection.
Speaking at the event, Moses Wamoto, a representative from the Joseph Waswa Foundation emphasised the importance of community participation.
"Jiggers are a serious problem that affects productivity, school attendance, and overall well-being. This campaign is not just about treatment but about empowering the community with knowledge and resources to eliminate this menace once and for all." He said.
The campaign, which started in Bokoli Ward, is expected to extend to other parts of Webuye West, targeting more victims and raising awareness about hygiene and sanitation.
Local leaders and health officials commended the initiative, urging other stakeholders to join in the fight against jiggers.
