Experienced neurosurgeons in the country held a training programme for younger doctors on brain surgery.

The training was held at the University of Nairobi Surgical Skills, the Aga Khan Hospital and at Kempinski Hotel.

They medics were trained on a new way to access the brain for better ways to visualise brain tumours.

Neurosurgeons are adopting the use of microscopy and endoscopy to access problems in the brain.

Endoscopy is a procedure in which a doctor uses an endoscope—a flexible tube with a camera—to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body, they are inserted directly into the organ.

This procedure can be used to examine problems in the brain and in the spinal cord.

Kenya has about 39 neurosurgeons covering the entire population, which is about one neurosurgeon for every 1.4 million people.
