The first 124 units of the Nairobi Affordable Housing project in Pangani will be completed by 2023.
Nairobi Lands and Housing CEC Charles Kerich said the first block of 18 floors is expected to be delivered in 45 weeks. The second one will commence in March 2021.
"The construction of 1,434 units along the Racecourse Road in Pangani which began last month is on course. The developer is on the ground already doing excavation," he said yesterday.
Pangani being the pilot project is estimated to cost Sh25 billion and sits on 5.2 acres of land valued at Sh4 billion.
In May last year, each of the 48 tenants received Sh600,000 to facilitate their resettlement rent for the next two years as construction works progress.
Once completed, the 48 tenants, who were evicted would be given first priority.
Each tenant will be allocated a new house, each which costs Sh3 million.
They are to pay for the houses in a 30-year period at a negotiated monthly rent of Sh8,000.
Kerich said the county has also made progress on Jevanjee estate, which is in Phase 2 of the project
Some locals have set up garages around the estate making it difficult to access the construction site.
"The garages will have to be moved. All the 81 tenants who had occupied the houses have relocated and the developer is on site," Kerich said.
The Jevanjee Housing project is expected to take two years and will fully be developed by Jabavu Limited with the county providing land.
A total of 1,800 new affordable units will be developed by Jabavu Limited which was awarded the tender.
The county also aims at implementing the affordable housing project in Ngong Road, Inspectorate staff quarters, Uhuru and Suna Road estates.
