President Uhuru Kenyatta has reviewed the number of people allowed to attend weddings and funerals from 15 to 100.

In his address to the nation on Wednesday, the president said all attendees must abide by the Covid-19 protocols as directed by the Ministry of Health.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe had directed that all persons attending funerals and weddings wear face masks at all times.

The order by the Ministry of Health also requires burial within 48 hours of death and to be presided by public health officers.

As for weddings, since resumption in June, garden wedding ceremonies have been limited to 45 minutes while those by the Attorney General’s office allowed a maximum of 20 minutes of which each couple is accompanied by two witnesses.

This comes as the country's total coronavirus infections rose to 33,016 on Wednesday after 213 more cases.

Fatalities now stand at 564 after five more succumbed to the disease.

Meanwhile, Uhuru extended the closure of bars and night clubs by another 30 days.

He said that the restriction on licensed hotels from selling alcohol has been lifted.

He also extended the 9pm to 4am curfew by another 30 days.

Uhuru noted that as much as the positivity rate has fallen, the virus is rapidly spreading to the counties.

"While our determination to manage the spread of this pandemic in cities like Nairobi and Mombasa has started to pay dividends, the crisis has however begun to percolate to the counties. The new frontier of this invisible enemy is increasingly shifting to the counties and rural areas," he said.
