ODM leader Raila Odinga Friday finally received the AstraZeneca vaccine jab.

Through his Twitter, the former Prime Minister urged Kenyans who are eligible for vaccination to get the vaccination jab.

"This afternoon I got the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine jab. Having been a victim of this deadly virus I urge all those who are currently eligible for vaccination to get vaccinated," he said.

Raila also appealed to the government to make plans for mass vaccination once they arrive.

"I also strongly encourage Kenyans to feel free to take the jab. We will overcome the virus!" he said.

In April, Raila said that he would also participate in the coronavirus vaccination exercise to boost Kenyans' confidence in the safety of the jab, stating that the vaccine is the only way to save the lives of Kenyans.

His comments came after he recovered from the virus following three negative tests.

Kenya’s effort to ensure at least 10 million people are vaccinated before Christmas received a major boost with the securing of additional vaccines from the UK government.

The 400,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines donated by the UK government are expected to arrive at JKIA on Saturday at 1 pm.

This is in an effort to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta’s targets that aim to ensure that at least 10 million Kenyans are vaccinated by Christmas this year and 26 million people by end of next year.

The government announced on Wednesday during the resumption of the administration of the first Covid jab to the priority groups.

To attain herd immunity the country is supposed to vaccinate at least 60 per cent of the population.
