The Media Council of Kenya has launched an industrial attachment programme for journalism and media students pursuing degree and diploma courses.

In a statement on Thursday, MCK CEO David Omwoyo said the programme will have 400 students undergo industrial attachment in different department in media houses yearly.

"Lack of functional relationship between the media industry and academia in the sector has frustrated the attainment of practical industrial exposure that is critical to skills transfer and progression of students in journalism training institutions," Omwoyo said.

The students will be distributed in cohorts of 100 every three months, across the country.

Media houses will take part in identification of the students and they will be required to provide working space and supervision for the students.

"The Council has seen the need of setting up infrastructure and extending support to promote and strengthen working relations between the media sector and training institutions in Kenya," the CEO said.

The Media Council will provide the trainees with a stipend of up to Sh15,000 for transport and insurance.
