A section of MPs drawn from the Mt Kenya region has resolved to back Deputy President William Ruto in his 2022 presidential bid.

On Saturday, over 40 legislators allied to the DP met in Laikipia County to deliberate on the position of the region comes 2022.

They said that for the last two years, they have been having discussions on matters concerning the welfare, the interests, and the future of the people they represent.

“In the past one year, we have engaged our constituents on the realities of our economic situation in light of the many impediments that have destroyed the commercial, business, and entrepreneurial efforts of the people we represent and have come to the conclusion that the next political discussion must be on the economy,” they said.

The MPs are from 11 counties of Mt Kenya namely Meru, Tharaka Nithi,Embu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru, and Nairobi.

Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika said that the MPs who attended the two-day discussion were 47, and the three who did not attend send their apologies.

They said that the economic blueprint developed with the help of experts shall now be subjected to a thorough interrogation in strategic sectoral meetings in villages, shopping centers, markets, barazas, town estates, amongst others, across the region.

“This engagement will culminate in the signing of a National Hustlers’ Economic Charter and subsequently a time-bound Covenant between the people and the candidate on specific deliverables of the region’s economic interests and specific development agenda/projects as well as the implementors of this agenda.”

They added that they have equally scanned the political landscape on possible presidential candidates on the basis of their understanding of the issues that are dear to our constituents and other Kenyans.

“For his track record as MP for Eldoret North, his demonstrable contribution in the ministries of Agriculture and Higher Education, his outstanding contribution to the success of this Administration,

especially in the first term, his commitment and loyalty to national unity and service delivery, his determination to the empowerment of the Hustler Nation, and his unrivaled support across the country, we have elected to work with William Samoei Ruto, and support him as our candidate of choice in next year’s general elections.”

According to them, the next move is to mobilise and urge their supporters and all Kenyans to be part of the new non-tribal, non-sectarian political dispensation under the UDA.

The leaders will also canvass the agenda of the people we represent on the platform of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Their take comes at the moment when every 2022 candidate seeks the support of the Mt Kenya people.

ODM leader Raila Odinga, and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi have also been making visits to the region.
