Nairobi deputy governor Anne Kananu has been sworn in as the new city governor.
Kananu was sworn in on Tuesday, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre Comesa Grounds.
Kananu has been acting governor since the ouster of Mike Sonko in December 2020.
Dressed in a red chiffon blouse and navy dark blue skirt suit, Anne Kananu took the oath presided over by Judge Lillian Mutende.
"The responsibility bestowed upon me as governor of Nairobi is no mean feat. However, I confidently state that with your support I am up to the task and I will serve you to the best of my ability," Kananu said.
"I am equally privileged to join H.E Governor Charity Ngilu and H.E Governor Ann Waiguru as the Country’s three female Governors."
Bishop Ben Mureithi opened the event with a word of prayer.
Nairobi MCAs were in attendance led by Majority Leader Abdi Hassan and his counterpart Michael Ogada from the Minority side.
Kananu stated that this is not the first time a woman has been at the leadership of Nairobi and she stands high on the shoulders of women who came before her.
She added that this also stamps another milestone for women and girls in Kenya and she hopes women are encouraged to participate in the leadership of the country.
“Nairobi is no stranger to women leadership-in 1971 the City elected as mayor, H.E the Late Margaret Kenyatta, the first African woman mayor of Kenya's capital city and the second African woman mayor in the country.”
“Her tenure in office was marked by many developmental programs and prioritised the issues of women, children, and education, which she viewed as the hope for Kenya's future.”
On November 8, the Supreme Court struck out an application by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko challenging the swearing-in of Anne Kananu as the next county chief.
Supreme Court judge Mohammed Ibrahim had earlier on directed the Assumption of Office of the county and the committee spearheading the process, to put on hold Kananu’s swearing-in for 14 days to allow Sonko to argue his matter.
“We lack jurisdiction to entertain the application. Objections by the clerk, Nairobi county assembly and county assembly sustained. Motion dated October 23 is incompetent and hereby struck out,” the court said.
