• Lenku's defection comes a few days after former governor Nkedianye defected from the Raila led party to Jubilee.

Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku is received by ODM leader Raila Odinga after defecting from Jubilee party to ODM at Chungwa House, Nairobi on March 24, 2022.

Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has ditched President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee party for ODM.

In a statement on Thursday, the Orange party said Lenku had defected alongside 10 Members of County Assembly from Kajiado County.

The governor was received by ODM leader Raila Odinga at the party's Chungwa House headquarters.

"Governor of Kajiado County Ole Lenku ditches Jubilee Party for the ODM. Also defecting are 10 MCAs who accompanied him to Chungwa House," the party said.

Lenku's defection comes a few days after former Kajiado governor David Nkedianye decamped from the Orange party to Jubilee.

He is said to have had fears that the nominations would not be fair.

While breaking the news of Nkedianye’s defection from ODM, Kajiado North MP Joseph Manje said the decision was arrived at after the former governor discovered he was 'being played' by individuals in the party.

“We realised that all was not going well in ODM and decided that we should join the Jubilee Party where we will meet with Governor Lenku in the nominations,” Manje said.

Manje, who is Nkedianye’s running mate in this year’s governor race, comes from the vote-rich Kajiado North.

The Orange party last week threw its weight behind Kajiado Governor Joseph Lenku to support his reelection bid.

Kajiado ODM branch chairman Tarayia ole Kores said the party had resolved to back Lenku’s reelection bid after Nkedianye betrayed the party.

“After a robust discussion among ourselves, we have taken exception to the defection of one of our members, David Ole Nkedianye, to another party,” he said.
