The rising cost of animal feed

Secretary-general Association of Kenya Feed Manufacturers [AKEFEMA] Martin Kinoti has said the huge prices of animal feeds are mainly driven by the rising cost of maize, which is a major raw material in production.

He said the price of maize has gone up to Sh4,200 per 90 kg bag from less than Sh3,000 last year.

He has also attributed this to the scarcity of soya which has gone up from Sh90 in 2020 to the current price of Sh120 per kilo.

"These prices are likely to go up again in the next one week due to the prevailing high cost of raw materials," said Kinoti.

Currently, the daily meal is retailing at Sh2,500 per 70kg per bag, layers at Sh3,500, broiler starter mash at Sh4,750 per 70 kg bag and pig feed is averaging at Sh2,550.
