Traffic snarl up as trailer burns along Mombasa road in Machakos

A trailer has burnt along Nairobi- Mombasa highway in Athi River, Machakos County.

The Nairobi bound vehicle developed mechanical problems before it completely got burnt at Stage39 Bridge, a few metres from Devki stage on Saturday.

Athi River South subcounty police commander Mary Njoki said the incident happened at around 2.30pm.

"Today at about 1430 hours at Stage39 Bridge, a trailer make Volvo, white in colour, belonging to Shreeji Enterprises developed mechanical problems and its cabin caught fire and got completely burnt, " Njoki told the Star.

Njoki said the vehicle was ferrying billets from Mombasa to Nairobi general direction when the incident happened.

The incident led to heavy traffic along the highway as brigade from Machakos County Government put out the fire.

Several motorists were forced to use alternative routes, diversions at KMC and Devki through Namanga Road, and which join Mombasa highway at Shalom Community Hospital's Nairobi- Namanga road interchange.

"We got phone calls from members of the public that a vehicle had caught fire along Mombasa road. We rushed to the scene and fought it, but unfortunately the vehicle got completely burnt. Its occupants escaped unhurt though," a fire brigade told the Star hours after the incident.

Njoki said they launched investigations into the incident.

Traffic officers from Athi River police station cleared the traffic after the burnt vehicle was removed from the scene thereby normalising operations on the highway.

The burnt cabin was carried to Athi River police station.
