Having many followers on social media has nothing to do with delays on visa issues, Lawyer Miguna Miguna has told foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau.
According to Miguna, the PS is giving a lame reason why visas are delayed.
"PS Kamau has problems. Now, he blames Twitter followers for his failure to get US visas. No, Amb. Kamau, there is no nexus between having millions of Twitter followers and US visas. Perhaps you should have gone home with despot Uhuru Kenyatta already," he tweeted.
Kamau said having many followers on social media could slow down the processing of US visa applications.
He told MPs that due to the American legislation, individuals who are politically active are always on the government’s radar.
“Once you become a Member of Parliament and your Twitter handle has got one million followers, that is enough to trigger the fact that you are now a politically exposed personality. This will result in your Visa [application] being referred to Washington and once it goes into reference, it joins a long queue…sometimes it can take up to three or four months,” Macharia said.
He was speaking during the induction of Members of Parliament at Nairobi’s Safari Park hotel.
The PS also said that some Western nations were using the visa issue to safeguard their national interests.
