Police in Kitale are in pursuit of accomplices of 22-year-old Brian Wafula who is suspected to have strangled his mother in Baraton, Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County.

The body of a laboratory technician, Judith Nafula Konya, who went missing was found in a river in Baratorn, Kiminini. She went missing on October 18.

Kiminini sub-county police commander John Onditi said there was a possibility that Konya was strangled by her son and his accomplices.

"It is definitely a line of inquiry that investigators are looking at," he said.

The police boss who spoke to the Star said police had made significant steps including the arrest of the prime suspect who was nabbed in Mtwapa in Kilifi County on Monday.

"We are in hot pursuit of the other accomplices of the prime suspect," he said.

"He will be transferred here to help us in further investigations. He will together with other suspects face murder charges," he added.

The police boss said significant lines of inquiry were being followed.

Police, he said, had dusted the crime of scene and were living nothing to chance in the murder probe.

"They can run but they cannot hide, the long arm of the law will soon catch up with them," he said.

The widower, Andrew Wanjala Wekesa, said his wife went missing on October 18, 2022, after being threatened by her son Brian Wafula.

Her body was found floating in the river Kiminini last Saturday.

"My son, who is a suspect, was arrested on Monday in Mtwapa where he had escaped to," he said.

"The family, Church, her colleagues and community are shocked by this murder - as are we - and we are still asking detectives to use every technique available to find other individuals responsible," he said.

A post-mortem examination that was scheduled for Monday was rescheduled to a later date after a feud rocked the family.

Wafula told the Star that his wife’s family had demanded that the deceased’s elder brother be allowed to witness the autopsy.

Tran’s Nzoia leaders who were equally shocked by the murder called for concerted efforts to save families.

Nominated ward representatives Margaret Wanjala, Sarah Lubano and Lydia Mecha said there was a need to have youths involved in drugs rehabilitated.

"We stand with the family of the late Mama Judith Nafula Konya. We feel the pain as women leaders and we are asking police to find other suspects," said Wanjala.

St. Joseph's Girl’s Chief Principal Rosebella Orwaru said the school will be standing with the family of the deceased.

"She was an integral part of the school," she said.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jacinda Wesonga assured the public that officers will ensure that all those involved in the murder are brought to book.

"Going forward we are going to have all those involved arrested. Families should not shy away from reporting children doing this in order to save lives," she said.
