The Anti Terrorism Police Unit and Joint Anti Terrorism Task Force received a major logistical boost on Friday.
The units were gifted with two top of the range vehicles and twelve motorbikes by the US government.
Federal Bureau of Investigation representatives Messrs Mike Solis and Julius Nutter presented the donations to DCI director Mohamed Amin.
Solis and Nutter presented the donations as courtesy of the growing and improving partnership of the security sector between the DCI and the United States.
The collaboration came from the immense mutual benefit of the two units in developing the human resource capacity of men and women in response to contemporary security challenges.
The initiation of the joint terrorism taskforce began after the al Shabaab terrorist attack at the Dusit D2 Hotel, which demanded for for a multi-agency counterterrorism investigative force in the country.
The donation aims at boosting the unit's operations in the anti-terror campaign.
“I am glad to note that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has jointly with the U.S government, developed and benefited from similar programmes," Amin said.
"This has exposed our detectives to contemporary crime detection, prevention and interdiction techniques, leading to an overall reduction of crime especially in reported cases of terror.”
The campaign was made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Anti Terror Assistance Programme and the State Department Bureau of Counter Terrorism.
“In one such high profile collaboration, the U.S Department of State and the Federal Bureau of Investigations partnered in creating the first Joint Terrorism Task Force outside of the United States," Amin said.
"Under this prestigious programme, 42 detectives drawn from the Anti Terrorism Police Unit underwent a 12-week intensive counterterrorism training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. We cannot thank the U.S government enough for this gesture,” he added.
Amin further said as a result of the training, there has been a decrease in the number of reported terrorism-related cases in the country.
He appreciated the partnership it has enjoyed between the U.S government and its strategic partners in recent years and invited other partners to work with the directorate for the safety and security of all.
Amin acknowledged the realisation of emerging threats such as terrorism and violent extremism that are not only unique to the country but also among global challenges that have had devastating effects to the United States and its strategic allies and partners.
