Makadara MP Yusuf Hassan has taken a trip down memory lane to 44 years ago when he worked as broadcaster at the BBC.

In a series of tweets on Friday, Hassan recounted his first time at the British Broadcasting Corporation saying it marked the beginning of an amazing journey.

"On this day in 1979, I arrived in Britain to begin my job as a broadcaster at the BBC WS located at Bush House in London," he said.

"From my role as a little-known broadcaster at VOK in Nairobi, I was given the opportunity to become an international journalist at the world's foremost global broadcaster, located in the bustling heart of one of the most exciting cities in the world."

Hassan said working at the BBC transformed his life and presented opportunities and a chance for him to grow.

He said he got the job even before he was through with his high school education.

"When I was recruited for the BBC through a competitive selection, leave alone having a degree, I had not even completed my high school!" he said.

The MP pointing out that he almost missed the job due to the archaic modes of communication at play during those days.

"In those days, there was no fax, internet or cellphone. They sent the offer to me by telex in May 1978 but I never received it," he said.

The media personnel cum politician said he got the message at the end of the year.

"At the end of 78, I met the mail man at the BBC Monitoring Service in Karen, who told me there were piles of telexes for me."

Hassan worked with the BBC until 1984, as a producer for BBC External Service in London.

Prior to his job at BBC, he worked at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), then the Voice of Kenya, as an announcer and producer in 1974.

In 1978, he worked as a reporter for the Arab Times for a year.

Between 1992 to 1994, Hassan worked with the Voice of America, the Africa Division.

The MP was then employed by the United Nations in 1991, serving as the  UNHCR Head of External and Media Relations in the Southwest and Central Asia.

He held the role until 2001 where he also represented UN organisation in East Timor and Southern Africa.

In 2002,  Hassan served as the Senior Policy Adviser for the UN Secretary General in New York and late in 2006, he became the director of IRIN, a UN news organization.

He stepped down in 2007 and joined politics.

Hassan has been the MP for Kamukunji constituency for four terms now, first stepping in, in 2012.
