At least three children were killed in a fire incident in the Gitaru area, Kiambu County.
The fire also flattened structures leaving many
homeless, police said.
The children were aged six,
four, and only three months old, police said.
Area police commander Anthony Mbogo said they are
yet to establish the cause of the fire. He said they are investigating the
tragedy.
Mbogo said they would talk to the parents of the children as
part of the probe.
Meanwhile, in Garissa County, another wildfire erupted on
the same day, just a month after Isiolo’s grasslands were destroyed.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the fire extended to
Modogashe, Eresaburu, and Gurufu, all along the Isiolo-Garissa border.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown.
Locals said it started about lunchtime on Wednesday.
According to images from the scene, the fire remained active late into the evening.
Emergency response personnel are collaborating with the local
community to put out the fire, which is thought to have begun in the
Sabena grazing zone before spreading swiftly to neighbouring places.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but the dry weather in the region has made it difficult to suppress
the flames.
Authorities have encouraged locals to remain attentive and adopt safety precautions as the fire spreads.
This current fire follows last month’s inferno in Isiolo,
which destroyed more than 300,000 acres of grazing area, leaving many
herders unable to find pasture for their animals.
According to reports, the Isiolo fire was caused by human error.
