Fire Incident

A massive fire broke out on Sunday in Kiambu town behind Petan Plaza just a few hours before midnight destroying properties worth millions.

The incident left residents rushing for safety as the blaze reportedly intensified at an alarming rate.

The fire is said to have started around 9:20 pm and was contained around 11 pm after it had spread to some buildings.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, several agencies including the Kenya Red Cross Action Team, Kenya Defence Forces and the Kiambu County Fire Brigade worked hand in hand to contain the situation.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi said that the disaster management team was deployed to the scene to respond to the tragedy.

''This evening, a building in Kiambu Town caught fire. The Kiambu County Government's disaster management unit was deployed to the scene. More updates to follow,'' a post on his social media handle said.

Images and videos seen by the Star captured the raging flames and smoke which spread quickly as residents could be heard screaming as emergency teams battled to extinguish the fire which eventually, they successfully did.

The witnesses raised concerns over the delayed response to the tragedy saying a timely response would have helped reduce the losses.

Investigations as to the cause of the incident are ongoing.
