Families left homeless as fire razes houses in Mlolongo

Several families in Mlolongo, Machakos County had to endure a night in the cold after fire razed their houses on Tuesday night.

Those affected by the fire lost all their personal belongings.

Athi River East Subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae said the victims were rendered homeless after their rented mabati houses went up in flames on Tuesday evening.

The matter was reported to Mlolongo Police Station as a fire incident report at 8.47 pm on the same day.

“It was reported by a member of the public through a phone call that there was a fire incident within Musau Road area of Mlolongo Township,” Mbae told the Star on the phone on Wednesday.

The police boss said the houses’ caretaker reported to have found the houses burning when he arrived at the scene of incident after responding to a phone call from the landlord.

He said the public helped put out the fire.

“Six mabati residential houses with household properties of unknown value were razed. The cause of the fire is still unknown,” Mbae said.

Mbae said there were no casualties reported in the incident. He said his officers processed the scene and necessary actions taken. They have launched investigations into the incident.

Elsewhere in the same Machakos county, Athi River South Subcounty, a second fire incident was reported to Kyumbi Police Station at 9.34 pm on Tuesday.

According to police, the fire broke out at Kwa Mwambi ranch, four kilometres South of the station and razed close to three acres of grassland.

“Police rushed to the scene and with the help of the public managed to put it off before the Fire Brigade team arrived. No life was lost, the cause of the fire is not yet known,” a police report seen by the Star read in part.

Police are investigating the incident.
