Peoples Democratic Party candidate Atiku Abubakar addresses a press conference on Thursday, March 2, 2023 in the capital Abuja.

Nigeria’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has broken his silence over Saturday’s General Election which Opposition parties labelled as a sham.

Speaking on Thursday in the capital Abuja, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate who finished second behind Bola Tinibu of the All Progressives Congress party (APC) said he won the election and will seek redress in the Supreme Court even though he has no confidence in the court.

He said the INEC, Nigeria's electoral body, ran a grossly flawed poll that was one of the worst in the democratic era.

“What if you seek redress and at the end of the day you don’t get a fair judgment, what will you do?” a journalist posed the question.

“Well, what can I do? If I don’t get a favourable judgment at the apex Court, I appeal to God,” he said.

He said winning an election is not as important as the credibility of the polls and electoral process.

Abubakar garnered 29 per cent of the votes to finish behind Bola Tinibu of the All Progressives Congress party (APC) who got 37 per cent of the vote to be declared President-elect.

Labour's Peter Obi managed 25 per cent of the votes and together with Abubakar dismissed the poll as a sham.

While speaking at the Press conference, Abubakar described the Supreme Court as one that he has no confidence will give him justice.

“You must remember that I took my boss, a sitting president to Court 11 times, trial court up to Supreme Court, I swear I never saw any judge,” he said.

He said all through the court process, the courts ruled against him.

“Do you think it’s possible today to do it?” he posed.

“I got judgment at the trial court, I got judgment at the appeal Court and I got judgment at the Supreme Court, so, I cannot say whether it’s the same Supreme Court until I test them,” he said.
