The Opposition on Tuesday accused the Kenya Kwanza government of sabotage, ahead of the bipartisan talks.
Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi on Tuesday poked holes into President William Ruto's bipartisan team of seven, arguing that the members were selected to sabotage the peace talks.
Speaking in Parliament, Wandayi stated that the Kenya Kwanza coalition was already kicking off the bipartisan talk on a wrong footing that would eventually lead to a stalemate.
"We are totally surprised and stunned by the fact that they have appointed Hon Adan Keynan who is a member of the Azimio la Umoja Coalition," he said.
Earlier in the day, Kenya Kwanza announced a seven-member team comprised of four MPs and three Senators.
They include Boni Khalwale (Kakamega Senator), George Murugara (MP Tharaka), Esther Okenyuri (Nominated Senator), Mwangi Mutuse (MP Kibwezi West), Lydia Haika (Women Rep Taita Taveta), Hillary Sigei (Senator Bomet) and Adan Keynan MP Eldas.
Eldas MP Adan Keynan is a member of the Jubilee Party which is part of the Azimio La Umoja Coalition.
However, Keynan is among Jubilee members who 'defected' from Azimio and pledged to work with the government after the Raila Odinga coalition lost the August 2022 elections.
Going further, Wandayi also expressed dissatisfaction and noted that Ruto had appointed Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse of Maendeleo Chap Chap, noting that it was a demonstration of bad faith.
"Legally, Jubilee Party and Maendeleo Chap Chap remain bonified members of the Azimio la Umoja Coalition," he said.
In May 2022, Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader Alfred Mutua signed an agreement with President Ruto, effectively ditching the Azimio coalition.
Mutua was rewarded and is currently the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
Wandayi added that the government was killing political parties which were among the issues to be addressed during the bipartisan talks.
"The idea of killing political parties is one of the issues that we would like to address in the bipartisan Committee," he said.
