Ruto meets deputy police IG Kanja, assures him of support

President William Ruto has assured the new Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police  Douglas Kirocho Kanja of his support.

While meeting him at State House on Thursday, the President vowed to ensure the creation of a professional independent police service.

 

"Welfare of the police is being addressed based on a task force report and all issues will be addressed," Ruto added.

Kanja succeeds Edward Mbugua who proceeded on terminal leave last month.

He served as the Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) before his latest appointment.

Earlier in the day,  Kanja was sworn into office at the Judiciary, a day after President  Ruto named him the new DIG KPS.

His boss the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, fellow DIG for Administration Police Noor Gabow, DCI boss Mohamed Amin and the members of the National Police Service Commission were present.

On his side, Kanja swore to deliver to Kenyans and ensure rule of law.

National Police Service Commission Chairman Eliud Kinuthia stated the need for Kirocho to hit the ground running in his new appointment.

“The work of the DIG is clearly cut out. Kindly fast-track the pending matters like personnel issues so that they do not have to proceed to the judiciary,” he said.

Inspector-General of Police Japheth Koome on his part reiterated the role of the police “to serve our country with diligence”. 

He went on to thank CJ Koome for promising to digitally link the OB with the judiciary.
