Young parliamentarians now have an opportunity to address climate change issues using legislative policies.
This is the outcome of a partnership between Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA) and Pan African Climate Justice Alliance.
KYPA CEO Anthony Buluma lauded the partnership and emphasised the commitment of legislators to the policy.
“This collaboration will help in capacity building, climate policy advocacy, grassroots conservation and sustainability programs, national and international events,” Buluma said.
KYPA chairperson Eric Wamumbi welcomed the partnership emphasizing the role of young generation in protecting the environment.
Wamumbi assured the role of young parliamentarians in leading the implementation of the aspirations of this MOU.
“As young members of the parliament, through this MoU, we have committed to being advocates of Climate Change in the National Assembly where there is a need for allocation of resources in various sectors such as agriculture, water, and other sectors that are the center of conserving our ecosystems,” Wamumbi said.
The Mathira MP mentioned that PACJA has been working with the Parliament in Kenya in addressing environment and climate change.
PACJA Executive Director Mithika Mwenda commended the role played by young legislatures in owning issues of Climate Change and linked impacts to the community.
“We appreciate people who are proactive as change will not come from other quarters but from young transformative leadership,” Mwenda said.
Several KYPA members witnessed the signing including KYPA Chairman, Eric Wamumbi, Vice Chair Gideon Kimaiyo, and KYPA Treasurer Hezena Lemaletian.
Hezena vouched for the inclusion of marginalized communities, specifically young women in the climate action initiatives.
On his part, vice chair Kimaiyo reiterated the need to engage the grassroots community as key stakeholders in all climate-related interventions.
