Twitter boss Elon Musk has said the company is working on deactivating all accounts that have had no activity for considerable periods of time.

The move, he said, will likely see some users lose followers once the purge is instituted.

"We're purging accounts that have had no activity at all for several years, so you will probably see follower count drop," Musk said his handle on Monday.

It's the latest change to be introduced by the billionaire businessman since he bought the giant social media platform in 2022.

He previously introduced subscription for the Twitter Blue badge which was formerly issued free of charge.

The change, which saw a number of users lose their verification marks, took effect on April 1.

Later on April 23, Musk  restored the badge for users with over a million followers at no cost.

Most beneficiaries for this change of heart were influential individuals such as politicians, celebrities, media companies and prominent journalists.

However, all the other users with less than one million followers must pay a monthly subscription fee of $8 (Sh972) to acquire and retain their blue ticks.

Twitter Blue subscribers enjoy priorities in replies, mentions and searches, which Musk said are essential features aimed at defeating spam and scams.

They are also able to add bold and italic texts on their Tweets and post longer videos of up to 1080p video uploads.

The badge also serves to avert the spread of fake news as it prompts people to share only information from authentic sources.
