Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday held an impromptu visit to Mbagathi Hospital which was recently renovated and equipped with a newborn unit.
He toured and inspected the newly installed state-of-the-art modern Newborn Unit that will house Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Level 5 hospital.
Wednesday's visit comes days ahead of the much-anticipated launch of the unit that will provide newborn nursery, special care nursery and neonatal intensive care services at the facility.
Sakaja has rolled out an ambitious agenda to equip all hospitals in Nairobi with human resources, drugs and equipment to enhance service delivery to the residents.
He has recently intensified supervision to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery through close monitoring of key projects at the centre of his ambitious manifesto.
While touring the facility on Wednesday afternoon, Sakaja stressed his mission to transform the health sector and position it as one of his key deliverables as governor as he promised Nairobians during his campaigns.
"I am committed to transforming and modernising county health facilities for the provision of affordable and quality healthcare services to Nairobi residents,' he said.
"I am impressed with what we have done here so far even as we look forward to scaling up this unit in three more facilities in Nairobi," Sakaja said.
Sakaja's government is planning to have full-equipped newborn units with full-fledged infectious diseases units at Pumwani, Mama Lucy and the proposed Mama Rachel Ruto hospital in Mutuini Hospital.
The facilities will also have full-board antenatal care units and infant nurseries to enhance care for newborns.
Sakaja was accompanied by his Chief Officer of Health Facilities Geoffrey Mosiria.
Sakaja recently publicly lauded Mosiria as being one of the most hardworking chief officers not only in Nairobi but also in the country.
The newborn babies with tininess related-complications requiring special treatment will acquire the services from the unit and help to decongest other health facilities such as Mama Lucy.
The Mbagathi facility will have four beds for the neonatal intensive care unit, four-bed infectious units and 48 incubators in the newborn unit.
The process of installing ventilators, non-inversive bypass ventilators, portable ultrasound machines, monitors, and defibrillators among other allied machines is ongoing.
Sakaja geared his commitment to transform and modernize county health facilities for the provision of affordable and quality healthcare services to Nairobi residents.
