President William Ruto’s 2023 Finance Bill has continued to receive backlash from MPs even after he insisted the Bill is good for the country's economy.
Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga who is a member of the Ford Kenya party led by Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula is the latest of the Kenya Kwanza MP to declare he won't back the bill.
Majimbo on Friday said he will oppose the Bill, claiming that it does not address the issues of his constituency.
Speaking during his homecoming ceremony, he said the bill will hurt Kenyans if passed and therefore, his good conscious cannot allow him to support it.
“I will go to the Parliament and vote no to the Finance Bill,” Kalasinga said.
Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau, who was present at the homecoming party, urged the MPs to listen to Kenyans even though the Bill has some benefits.
“We must brush off the bill and agree which areas should be changed,” Bisau said.
On June 4, 2023, Ruto said he is waiting to see legislators who were going to oppose the Bill.
"I am waiting for the Members of Parliament who will go and vote against the employment of these young people, against housing that would give these people the chance to own a house with five per cent mortgage," he said on Sunday.
He said the lawmakers had fewer mortgages because of the tax paid by the public.
Ruto spoke during the thanksgiving service of Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya in Narok.
The Bill which is already at the National Assembly awaiting the MPs' decision, has been subject to fierce criticism from leaders and Kenyans alike.
