Migori Women Representative Fatuma Mohammed has told off the  Kenya Kwanza government on its plans to introduce the housing levy.

While debating in Parliament on Wednesday, she noted that Kenyans have more and serious challenges at the moment, with housing not being key.

“Kenyans are not interested in the 1.5 percent housing levy; they want food on their tables. Our children are going hungry; we don’t need houses,” Mohammed said.

“ You should be ashamed of yourselves. There’s a golden house waiting for me in heaven; I don’t need one from Kenya Kwanza."

The Woman Rep said that the government has not fulfilled any of its promises.

“We know your fake promises. Even If we give you 100 per cent, those houses will never come,” Mohammed added.

She urged the government to face reality and read the mood of Kenyans who she said are tired of empty promises.

MPs on Monday reviewed the housing levy from three per cent to 1.5 per cent mandatory contribution.

Employees will be required to contribute 1.5 per cent of their monthly pay to the programme that seeks to provide affordable houses to Kenyans.

The proposal has suffered rejection from Kenyans including some leaders from both the government and the opposition.

Azimio chief Raila Odinga warned that if the Bill is passed, the opposition will regroup and overrun Ruto.

"Should Ruto overrun the National Assembly, we will regroup and overrun him in the wider National Assembly of the whole people of Kenya."

However, President William Ruto reiterated that the plan would provide employment for the youth.

He hit out at leaders opposing the mandatory contribution saying it was absurd to reject a programme that would benefit the people.

"Nilikuwa naona mwingine jana. Mtu amechanguliwa na almost 70 per cent ya watu wamemchagua wanaisha kwa slum. Alafu yeye anapinga mpango ya slum upgrading. Si huyo ni wazimu?" he posed.
