National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichungwah has said the destruction of property by the protesting individuals must be stopped by all means.

In a statement reacting to a video of a section of protestors vandalising parts of the Nairobi Expressway, Ichungwah wondered how that translated to peaceful demonstrations.

The Kikuyu MP also lashed out at the media, saying that they will end up blaming the police for the chaos, yet it is the doing of the people.

"This madness by all means must stop. Is this a peaceful protest/procession??? And the Githeri Azimio Media will blame the police for dispersing “peaceful demonstrators,” he said.

The protests had been called by the Azimio outfit to protest over the high cost of living brought about by the recently passed Finance Act, 2023.

Protesters on Wednesday pulled down the Expressway barrier near Mlolongo.

They were seen pulling the barrier by force to remove it.

As some of them were pulling the barrier, others were jumping and shouting.

Transport has also been paralysed on the Mombasa Highway as anti-government protesters barricaded the road at Nairobi Expressway exit in Mlolongo, Machakos county.

Hundreds of demonstrators thronged the highway and barricaded it on Wednesday morning.

This caused a heavy traffic snarl along the road as operations along both the Expressway and the highway remained paralysed.

In a statement, Moja Expressway said a section of the Nairobi Expressway toll services have been temporarily halted at Mlolongo, Syokimau, and SGR Toll Stations due to the ongoing demonstrations.

The company said that efforts were underway to restore normalcy to the road.
