Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris has broken has silence and condemned the violent attack on her Kirinyaga counterpart Jane Jane Njeri.

Njeri was attacked on Tuesday by people she said were hired goons during a project inspection tour in Kerugoya town and sustained head injuries.

The lawmaker was airlifted to Nairobi where she continues to receive treatment.

"Just visited Kirinyaga Woman Representative Hon Jane Njeri following the distressing incident in Kerugoya where she was attacked while carrying out her duties," Passaris said in a statement Thursday evening.

"I condemn this violence in the strongest terms – differing opinions should never resort to such actions. Sending wishes for a speedy recovery to her and all those affected," she added.

The attack on Njeri attracted uproar in the political circles with leaders across the political divide expressing outrage over the incident.

In a rare show of solidarity, Members of Parliament from both the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio took time out of their afternoon session on Tuesday to condemn the attack.

National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, however, warned the legislators against making the matter a gender issue saying the attack was also an assault on the entire institution.

"It is not a women’s affair, it is an attack on a Member of Parliament, and an attack on a Member of Parliament is an attack on all of you irrespective of their gender, so we should not reduce it to a gender issue," he said.

Njeri was attacked while inspecting a county government-funded solar water borehole project that had been vandalised.

She had arrived at the Kirinyaga Police Headquarters in Kerugoya to record a statement regarding the vandalism that happened on Friday last week in her presence.

The Woman Rep was accompanied by a section of her supporters and area MCA when a rival group emerged and began fighting them.
