Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua on Monday signed two instruments of accession.
CS Mutua signed the Kigali Amendment on the Montreal Protocol on the Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
In a statement, CS Mutua said that the Kigali Agreement is an amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
He added that it is an environmental treaty signed by countries to phase out Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs) from the earth's atmosphere.
"The Minamata Convention on Mercury is an international treaty designed to protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds," he said.
He said that the signing of the Instruments of Accession was aptly done on the sidelines of the Africa Climate Summit.
He said that subsequent depositing of these Instruments with the United Nations secretary general during the Treaty Week at the upcoming United Nations 78 General Assembly (#UNGA78) session will help to reinforce Kenya’s Climate Credentials.
Delegates and leaders have converged at KICC for the Africa Climate Summit.
The summit will run until September 6, 2023, with a continuation of the Climate Summit week.
President William Ruto is hosting the summit in his capacity as the coordinator of all African heads of state on climate change within the AU.
Among key issues that are being discussed at the forum are how to tackle the increased exposure of emitters, investing in nature and biodiversity, solutions to climate change, and climate change financing for Africa.
