The National Cohesion and Integration Commission is committed to building peace structures within communities in all the counties, NCIC Commissioner Danvas Makori has said.
He said the commission through the ‘Amani kwa Ground’ initiative wants to sensitise Kenyans on the importance of peace.
“We want to build peace structures within the communities,” Makori said on Tuesday in Machakos.
He said the commission has partnered with the Machakos government for a three-day workshop to sensitise youth leaders on the need for a peaceful county and country. Some 102 youths attended the workshop.
“The youth are drawn from nine categories including business and political sectors. We are training them on issues of mediation, peace and security,” Makori said.
He said the commission chose Machakos since it is a metropolitan county and it is usually peaceful.
“We want to build more resilient structures of peace and security in the country hence the call on the youth, especially in political circles, to join us in peace advocacy,” Makori said.
He said the youth were the most vulnerable population hence the ones mostly used to breach peace, especially during political seasons.
Machakos MCA Mary Kituku thanked NCIC for including the youth in the training.
“As the youngest MCA, I want to thank NCIC for including all the youth leaders in the county in peace talks that affect us most during chaos or violence,” Kituku said.
