Former United Democratic Alliance vice chairman Kipruto Arap Kirwa has opined that the hike in oil prices is because the Kenyan shilling has lost value due against the dollar.
Kirwa, who spoke on Monday night during an interview with Citizen TV, said currently, the price of crude oil in dollars is lower than it was back in 2022.
"Fuel now is more expensive. What has really spiked the price of oil is the fact that the dollar has misbehaved here in Kenya and that you cannot blame on the previous administration," he said.
In his opinion, the current regime should not blame the previous regime for what is going wrong, but rather, the Kenya Kwanza government should do what they think is best for the nation and keep it at that.
"Don't spend a lot of time telling people what the previous regime did not do. Do what you are doing and tell us what you are doing now. Blaming things on the previous regime is just trying to play the same songs that you played during the campaigns," he said.
This comes after fuel prices crossed a record Sh200 mark for the first time in Kenya's history, with the rate rising by as much as Sh20 for every litre.
In its latest price review released last week Thursday, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority revised the prices upwards as follows; Super Petrol by Sh16.96, Diesel by Sh21.32 and Kerosene by Sh33.13.
This means the pump prices will be as follows; Super Petrol at Sh211.64, Diesel at Sh201 and Kerosene at Sh202.13 per litre in Nairobi.
