A mother and her three children have been killed after a fire razed their house in Bonyando, Kisii.
Villagers said the fire broke out Wednesday night as the family slept.
The children were suffocated to death with fumes from the burning mattresses.
The children were aged 10, nine and four.
The fourth, six months, is being attended to at the Kisii Referral Hospital.
Their mother, Carol Nyaboke 38, died as she was being rushed to hospital for treatment.
John Ayago family spokesman said the fire started from where the children were sleeping before quickly spreading to other parts of the house.
"The mother tried to get out through a hole drilled by villagers but it appears the burns were severe and she died on the way to hospital," he said.
Kisii South OCPD Charles Machinji said investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital waiting for postmortem.
