Fish farmers in Kenya may soon start benefiting after President William Ruto promised to halt fish importation from China.

The move is aimed at promoting the local fish farmers boost sales and lower the high cost of living.

The President said farmers in Lake Victoria are empowered so they can be able to fish and feed the nation and reduce the cost of living.

"In the budget that we have passed this year, we have agreed that the country should not import fish from China, we want to harvest our own fish to push the country forward," he said.

The President added that the government has invested Sh900,000 in Lake Victoria to build a fish landing site.

Ruto urged Nyanza counties to invest in fish farming to boost the country's economy.

The President spoke during the thanksgiving of MP Elisha Odhiambo on Friday in Siaya County.

The President is on a four-day development tour of the Nyanza region where he is expected to launch a number of development projects.

During the Nyanza tour, Ruto will visit Victory Fish Farms in Sindo crucial project for the region's aquaculture sector growth.

He will also launch the rehabilitation of the Homa Bay Pier and other piers, such as the Kendu Bay, Mbita, and Asembo Bay Piers, significantly boosting marine transport and tourism.

In Migori County, the President will launch the Last Mile water connectivity project at Kegonga, Kuria East, ensuring improved access to clean water and spearhead the commissioning of a tuition block at Rongo University.

He will also commission Uriri Hospital, strengthening the healthcare infrastructure and launching the construction of the Mabera affordable Housing project in the Kuria West constituency.

While in Homa Bay County, the President will spearhead the launch of the construction of the 53km Mfangano Island Ring Road and the upgrading to bitumen standards of 74km Mbita- Sindo-Kiabuya-Sori Road.
