Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General Collins Oyuu has said he was safe and out of danger following a road accident in Kisumu on Monday.
Oyuu, who was discharged after undergoing a thorough checkup at Kisumu's Aga Khan Hospital, assured union members and Kenyans that he was in good health.
The Knut boss said the driver was also in safe and stable condition.
"As you can see I am very much okay, alive and kicking. I want to announce here officially that my driver and I are totally out of danger," Oyuu said during a press briefing.
He was involved in an accident when his driver avoided hitting a motorbike rider who was ferrying four pupils to school in the Kit Mikayi area in Seme subcounty.
"I had a dark moment in my life this morning when I was heading to Kisumu. I had a bad accident when I was from my home about 50 kilometres away," Oyuu said.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled three times before landing on the road facing upsidedown according to witnesses.
Oyuu said they were stuck in the vehicle for about 15 minutes before the were rescued and rushed to the hospital.
He was heading to Kisumu International from his home in Rarieda when he escaped death narrowly during the accident.
"Onlookers were shocked to see us get out of the vehicle unhurt and alive. The vehicle is badly damaged and I thank God we are alive," Oyuu said at the hospital.
He added that the accident would have been very fatal if the driver could have failed to avoid the rider during the morning accident.
"We could be talking of five dead bodies if my driver did not swerve to save the four children and the rider," Oyuu said.
He thanked union members and officials for their prayers and for visiting him at the hospital, assuring them that he was good to go on with his duties.
Several Knut officials led by executive secretary David Obuon alongside family members visited the Oyuu at the hospital.
