National Assembly leader of Minority Opiyo Wandayi has termed President William Ruto's sentiments on El Nino as insensitive.

The President earlier claimed that the Kenya Meteorological Department had ruled out the possibility of having El Nino.

Kenya Met had earlier predicted that El Nino would hit the country from mid-October to December, however, the President said Kenya will not experience El Nino rains.

Speaking on Wednesday, Wandayi said the President would have listened to the weather experts.

"The statement that Honourable Ruto made over El Nino was not only reckless but quite unfortunate because any sensible government must listen to its experts and more so those employed by taxpayers," Wandayi said.

"We have a very efficient Kenya Meteorological Department that has been of immense help in the past in terms of predicting weather patterns. It was quite unfortunate for one to come out and say that God has come to our aid, God has listened to our prayers."

On Tuesday, Kenya Met Director David Gikungu said Kenya is now experiencing El Nino rains.

He said El Nino is not always about rainfall but there are other factors which show El Nino.

"For parts of East Africa, when we have an El Nino event, it is associated with excess rainfall and is not always that way. We have other drivers which we monitor as signals. Yes,  it is El Nino, today I have looked at the features and it is positive," he said.

In October, the President said that the department had scaled El Nino rains down to heavy rains but not destructive.

"You heard the news that we would experience El Nino which will destroy places and property. But who is God? You've heard they have said we won't have El Nino," he said.

He said the rains will be good for the country's agricultural sector.

However, Wandayi took issue with his sentiments saying Ruto made a joke that has led to the loss of lives.

"That is making a joke out of a serious issue, now here we are with El Nino catching us unprepared which has led to the loss of due consideration to the opinions of lives and property," he said.
