The body of a KCSE candidate, Jacob Muasya, who on Friday drowned at a Machakos dam has been retrieved.
It was retrieved after several hours of search by local divers with the help of officers from the KBC police station and residents.
Muasya died after drowning shortly after sitting his last KCSE exam in Matungulu, Machakos County.
The deceased is said to have been in the company of four other boys.
He is said to have drowned as they were taking selfies at the dam.
Matungulu sub-county police commander Peter Omondi said the Wendano secondary school student’s body was retrieved on Friday evening.
“The student together with his four colleagues who had just completed KCSE exams went to the dam. His fellows realized his absence when they came out of the water and raised alarm,” Omondi told the Star by phone early Saturday.
“Police and the public responded and mounted a search leading to the body's retrieval,” Omondi added.
The police boss said the deceased was reported to have drowned at around 5.00 pm.
The drowning incident was reported at KBC police station, the subcounty headquarters' police command.
There were claims that the five had been taking selfies before the tragedy struck.
Matuu assistant chief Raphael Musyoki earlier said the five were taking selfies at the dam when the boy drowned.
"The five were taking pictures after completing their exams today. They were headed home from school and decided to take pictures unknown to them disaster would strike," Musyoki said.
"They are students at Matuu Wendano Secondary School and have just finished the KCSE exams. They stopped by the dam to take pictures and enjoy themselves. Unluckily one of the boys slipped and fell into the water and drowned," he added.
Musyoki said the other four escaped after witnessing the incident.
"I was notified about the incident and informed the police. We are trying to drain the dam as we search for the body," he said.
