A 40-year-old woman sustained serious injuries, while 25 others suffered soft tissue injuries in a self-involved accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Machakos County.
Athi River South Sub-County Police Commander, Jos Mudavadi, reported that the accident occurred when a tyre of a minibus burst near the Mua flyover.
It happened a few meters from the Maanzoni Lodge area, around 1:30 pm on Thursday.
"It occurred today at about 1.30 pm along the Nairobi - Mombasa highway near the Mua Road flyover. It involved a motor vehicle, Mitsubishi FH minibus which was being driven by one Titus Nyamai Mboya aged 43 years," Mudavadi told the Star by phone on Thursday.
Mudavadi said upon reaching the scene of the accident, the vehicle's outer rear right wheel had detached making the inner tire unable to sustain the weight making it burst.
"This caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and it overturned in the middle of the road," Mudavadi said.
"About 25 others sustained soft tissue injuries and were all rushed to Machakos Level 5 hospital where they are undergoing treatment."
The police boss said the scene was attended to and processed by traffic officers from the Kyumbi police station.
The busy highway was later cleared after a traffic snarl up caused by the accident which lasted for around 45 minutes.
The wreckage was towed to Kyumbi police station.
Mudavadi said they had launched investigations into the accident.
