A man has been sentenced to three years in jail for impersonating a police officer.

Augustine Musume Juma was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts on Friday and charged with the offence, which took place on Tuesday, January 16.

According to the charge sheet, Juma falsely presented himself to Inspector Ibrahim Adan and Corporal Philip Suntu as a police officer stationed at SGB Makadara.

He also assumed to arrest one Laban Solomon Wachiya and ordered him to board a motorcycle which was to take them to Kangemi Police Station.

On the way, Adan and Suntu stopped them at Ngara and started questioning them when the impersonator introduced himself as Dennis Lufuta.

He produced a copy of the certificate of appointment to the administration of police service in the name.

When he was unable to give his purported service number, the two officers realised that he was not their colleague.

They then arrested Juma and took him to Ngara Police Station.

Police recovered a pair of handcuffs which are believed to have been stolen or otherwise unlawfully obtained.

In court today, appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Susan Shitubi, Juma pleaded guilty to the impersonation.

He was then convicted on his plea of guilty.

In mitigation, he asked for forgiveness expressing his regret.

He told the court that he is a father of three and prayed that it to let him go so he could continue providing for his family.

The court however observed that posing as a police officer was a serious offence and proceeded to serve him a jail term.

"I sentence you to three years in jail for each count. The sentence is to be served concurrently," Shitubi ordered.

Legal Information Institute defines a concurrent sentence as that which allows the defendant to serve all of their sentences at the same time, where the longest period of time is controlling.
