The Star Newspaper has termed the attack on its Siaya correspondent an act of violence and intimidation.

Josiah Odanga was on Sunday insulted and physically assaulted by two journalists who blocked him and other journalists from covering an event.

In a statement, Radio Africa Group Head of Content Paul Ilado termed the incident deplorable and a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of constitutional freedoms.

"It deeply saddens us to learn that our reporter was targeted by fellow journalists simply because he hails from a different county of Homa Bay while covering news in Siaya County," he said.

"As an organisation committed to upholding the values of press freedom and the right to access information, we firmly believe in the constitutional guarantee of the freedom to live and work anywhere within our country."

Ilado said Odanga's professional duty to provide accurate and unbiased news coverage should never have been overshadowed by personal background or origin.

He added that attacks on journalists not only endanger their lives but also threaten the essence of a free and vibrant press that is essential for a functioning democracy.

"Every journalist, regardless of their background, deserves the right to carry out their work without fear of violence or intimidation," Ilado said.

He called on the police in Siaya County to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Ilado said it is crucial that the rule of law is upheld and those responsible for the barbaric act held accountable for their actions.

"We also urge the local community and all stakeholders to reject any form of violence and instead foster an environment that respects diversity, inclusivity, and the freedom of the press. We stand in solidarity with our reporter and all journalists who face similar challenges while fulfilling their professional duties."

The Head of Content said Kenyans should reaffirm the commitment to press freedom, the protection of journalists and the unyielding principle that no one should be attacked or discriminated against based on their origin or place of work.

Odanga was attacked at Karariw Primary School where Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo was distributing bursaries to needy students.

He suffered a blow to the head, leaving a gaping wound. He was treated at Siaya County Referral Hospital where he was rushed while bleeding profusely.

His mobile phone and a watch were also damaged by his attackers.

The matter was reported at the Siaya Police Headquarters under OB No 42/20/01/24.

The Star newspaper writer was also insulted by a colleague from a vernacular radio station before being assaulted by another who corresponds for a national TV station.

"I was conversing with a colleague when he came pointing at my eyes as if to prick them with his fingers while verbally insulting me. I implored him to calm down and make his cause of anger known without being emotional but he refused to listen to the voice of reason," Odanga said.

He said his colleagues who attacked him have been discriminative towards him and other journalists who are non-natives of Siaya and often label them using nasty names.

"To them, it seems, Siaya County is theirs to work in and dominate. For instance, they call me Ja' South, meaning a person from South Nyanza," explained Odanga.

Ja'South, in the context used, is an undertone suggesting discrimination on the basis of one's origin.
